One of the most frequent questions I get is, “What is the best month to take my senior pictures?” With endless ideas on Pinterest and so many options, it can easily get overwhelming. Sit tight and read on because I’ll break it all down for you so you can pick the most perfect month for YOUR senior portraits!

The summer after your junior year is when “senior season” begins for photographers and is the most popular time for senior portraits. There’s an abundance of sunlight and location options. Fall comes in a close second, and is a great time for a senior session if you want to wear layers, or be photographed among the foliage. Spring of your senior year has gorgeous weather (when it’s not raining!), and although is a good time for photos, it can be tricky to fit them in between all of your end-of-school year activities.

No matter what season you decide to have your session done, the most important part is planning ahead! Check out the sessions below to see what style appeals to you the most, so you can plan accordingly.

June is one of the best months to take senior photos. It’s warm but not too hot yet, there’s still greenery and all the plants haven’t died off in the summer heat. Blossoming flowers, green grass, trees full of green leaves and vineyards are beautiful this month. There’s also much more availability since you’ll be out of school.

July and August are also great months for senior portraits if you want a “summer” look and want to show off your tan! Although it’s hot during these months, there’s plenty of beautiful outdoor settings with bright colors. July is when the sunflowers are in bloom and you can find fields of them all around town. Scheduling during the summer months is perfect for fall athletes who will be very busy after school starts.

Just a note: Our studio’s summer schedule books out very quickly!

September is still very warm in Northern California, and photos taken this month still have that “summer” look, but with cooler temps.

October and November are perfect months for you if you want to take your photos with gold and orange leaves in the background and scattered on the ground, or at a pumpkin patch! This time of year, rustic and country locations look beautiful and the lighting is very golden.

In this part of the country, we can still get a fall look well into December.

February is technically still winter, but it always feels like spring to me at senior sessions! We have started getting rain at this point, so all of the greenery is coming back and looking really fresh. Orchards with blossoms, and the yellow mustard fields begin this month and continue through March.

March and April give us lots of options for beautiful flowers, fields of green, and the creek beds are full of water. This time of year is ideal for senior pictures as far as locations go, but you’ll want to consider your busy schedule with end-of-year senior events as well as the rainy season which leads to possible rescheduling.
